Organizational Setting

The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be exploited while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public, patients and the environment. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services.

The Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section is responsible for the delineation of an international programme to protect workers, patients and the public from all types of exposure to natural or artificial radiation, in line with the most recent scientific knowledge and information. The Section is also responsible for the provision of radiation safety technical services to staff members and experts who may be exposed to ionizing radiation as a result of activities conducted by the IAEA.

The Radiation Protection Unit is responsible for supporting the Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC) and for providing oversight of the development of radiation safety standards within the Safety Standards Series. It serves as the focal point for the development of general radiation protection documents for all types of exposure and situations, and for their integration and implementation. It also develops safety standards and guidance related to the protection of the public in existing exposure situations such as radon in buildings, radionuclides in building materials and other commodities, and non-medical imaging. Finally, the Unit maintains professional links with other international and specialist agencies concerned with radiation safety and promotes international coherence and consistency of radiation safety practice.

Main Purpose

As team leader reporting to the Section Head, the Unit Head (Radiation Protection Unit) develops and coordinates the development of IAEA safety standards on radiation safety, particularly for the protection of the public and the environment, and leads the review and approval of such standards.


The Unit Head (Radiation Protection Unit) has several roles: (a) adviser to the Section Head with formulating the subprogramme related to preparation of Radiation Safety Standards. (b) programme developer and coordinator in a multilateral environment with diverse views on the issues, finding workable solutions and presenting arguments that can achieve results; (c) manager and team leader, to ensure that programmes and tasks are implemented effectively; and (d) facilitator of inter-organizational cooperation in the development of radiation safety standards.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Leads, in close cooperation with the Section Head and other relevant senior IAEA staff, the IAEA’s activities focusing on achieving international consensus essential for preparation of radiation safety standards.

Leads and coordinates the development of safety standards and other guidance documents in preparation for submission for approval to Radiation Safety Standards Committee (RASSC), including serving as Scientific Secretary to RASSC, and liaising with other international and specialized organizations concerned.

Provides for the application of IAEA safety standards in IAEA Member States, and within the framework of activities under the Inter-Agency Committee on Radiation Safety. Builds and maintains partnerships across work areas in the Department and beyond to ensure the coherence and synergy of related programmes of work.

Builds and maintains strategic partnerships and alliances with a wide range of stakeholders in IAEA Member States, international and other governmental organizations and non-governmental organizations aiming to provide for application of the IAEA radiation protection standards.

Leads the development of general radiation protection criteria for managing exposures due to both natural and human-made radionuclides. Particular attention is focused on existing exposure situations, including those that follow the termination of a nuclear or radiological emergency. Incorporate these criteria into the IAEA safety standards and related guidance and identify the emerging issues in radiation safety in cooperation with inter alia ICRP, UNSCEAR and other UN organizations and professional bodies.

Plans and coordinates the Unit’s work to ensure the delivery of programme objectives, including the supervision of the staff of the Unit.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

Master’s Degree

Advanced university degree in Nuclear Engineering.

Minimum 10 years‘ experience in radiation protection, including at least 5 years at a managerial level involving the development of radiation protection guidance.

Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.


The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $88162 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 45403*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks‘ annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
