The objective of this short-term consultancy is to provide programmatic support to the Assessment and Management of Environmental Pollution (AMEP) and Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW) sub-programmes.

Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

UNEP’s Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.

The UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat, based in Kingston, Jamaica, is seeking two Individual Contractors to support the work of its Sub-Programmes on the Assessment and Management of Environmental Pollution (AMEP) and Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW).

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the respective Programme Management Officers, the incumbents will carry out the following duties: 1. Programme Assistance:

Assist the Programme Management Officer in timely preparation and monitoring of project proposals/documents, technical and financial progress and final reports, Memoranda of Understanding, agreements and draft Terms of Reference for consultants;
Assist in promoting AMEP/SPAW Protocol/Sub-programmes through preparation and dissemination of awareness raising publications;
Assist in drafting PowerPoint presentations and charts/tables;
Liaise with the Regional Activity Centres for the AMEP/SPAW Sub-programme regarding programme activities;
Maintain/Update project and contact databases and tracking tools for AMEP/SPAW regional programmes, disseminate information to Contracting Parties (governments) and partner organizations;
Assist in fundraising activities of AMEP/SPAW.

2. Coordinate information flow:

Processing and drafting routine correspondence and responses;
Assist in increasing efficiency and effectiveness of information flow;
Assist in updating of webpage of UNEP-CAR/RCU and or project webpage;
Handle inquires pertaining to the substantive office, receive telephone calls, answer routine queries and receive visitors;
Respond to requests for information from UNEP headquarters, other UN agencies and other local, regional and international organization.

3. Assist in work organization and meetings:

Assist in the logistics of national and international meetings and virtual conferences, assist participants with arrangements to the meeting;
Assist in setting up meetings, process documents for the meetings, type the agenda, list of participants and working documents, send out invitations;
Provide secretariat services during meetings and distribute minutes/report of meetings.

4. Filing: Establish an up-to-date and suitable online filing system for the sub-programmes.

5. Perform any other duties assigned.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualifications: Completion of High School diploma is required. First Degree in Environmental Management, Biological Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering or a related science field will be an asset. Supplementary training in administration, programme or project management is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of five years progressive work experience in administration, programme or project management or related area is required. Experience working with an international organization is desirable. Regional exposure and/or experience with environmental programmes and projects in the Caribbean will be an asset.

Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the posts advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
