Who we are looking for : This vacancy announcement is aimed at building/maintaining a roster of mid- career (3-5 years of relevant working experience) and senior (6+ years of relevant working experience) Technology Lead profiles for potential future recruitment by WFP’s country offices (COs) globally. Please note that although future opportunities might allow the candidates to start working remotely, relocation to the country office location might become necessary at a later stage, thus, global mobility is desirable.

WFP’s Technology Division is the digital business engine of the organization, providing the business with multi-pronged and resilient technical capabilities able to respond with the agility required in humanitarian operations, be they manmade or in a natural disaster setting. The Technology Division continues to increase its activities to meet the constantly growing demand from the organization and implement the initiatives related to digital transformation.


Reporting to supervisor of the hiring org unit, and with a dotted (functional) reporting line to the Head of Field Application Development Unit of the Technology Division, the Technology Lead oversees for all technical aspects of the design, implementation, and maintenance of the IT solution, providing direction, instructions and guidance to the relevant stakeholders & implementers. Technology Lead works to ensure the relevant IT solutions are fully compliant with WFP standards and considers their technical usability, user acceptability, and domain suitability.

ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES (not all-inclusive, nor exhaustive):

Produce all the necessary materials to document the technical aspects related to software design and architectural decisions (i.e. database models, components interactions, integration and data ingestion patterns).

On regular basis track and report on the IT solution’s compliance with all relevant technological requirements and other procedures, including WFP’s Guidelines for Software Solutions .

Using the dedicated internal tools provide the Head of Field Application Development with the documentation related to the IT solution and environment design, development and implementation.

On regular basis provide report on security scan and automated tests (E2E and unit tests) performed by the development teams on the overseed platforms.

Define the procedures required to decommission and archive the solution and all the associated data.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of IT Policies and Standards at WFP; and

Cooperate during IT solution audits, Information Technology Division reviews and implementation of extraordinary measures, promptly addressing any concerns raised.

When applicable, prepare and provide the Head of Field Application Development with sufficient documentation using dedicated internal tools, in order to allow operation, maintenance and hand-over of processes to the relevant successor.


Education: University degree in computer science, mathematics, software engineering, or related fields.


For mid-career Technology Lead - at least 3 years of working experience in computer science, mathematics, software engineering, or related fields, including experience deploying in enterprise production environments.

For senior Technology Lead - at least 6 years of working experience in computer science, mathematics, software engineering, or related fields, including experience deploying in enterprise production environments.

Technical Skills & Knowledge:

In-depth knowledge and proficiency with mainstream software design & development technologies and methodologies, developing high-quality IT solutions, and Agile Scrum.

Knowledge of Continuous Integration (CI) and Continuous Deployment (CD).

Knowledge of user authentication and authorization between multiple systems, servers, and environments.

Knowledge of software optimization (especially for low-bandwidth high-latency environments).

Understanding of accessibility, security compliance, design principles behind a scalable IT solution, and the differences between delivery platforms, such as mobile vs desktop, and optimizing output to match the specific platform.

Ability to integrate multiple data sources and databases into one system and create database schemes that represent and support business processes.

Fluency in oral and written English. Intermediate knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese (one of WFP’s working languages) is desirable.


WFP offers a competitive compensation package which will be determined by the contract type and selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
