A description of a long-term project you would like to work on throughout your period at the OTP, which is of interest to you and which would assist the Forensic Science Section’s work (maximum of 750 words, single spaced, type written). In the past, visiting professionals have contributed by undertaking in-depth research, development of standards or enhancing the Section’s professional training capacities.
To participate in containing the COVID-19 spread and in line with the measures adopted by the Host State, the ICC staff members, interns and visiting professional based in The Hague are currently working remotely. Accordingly, the candidates selected for this position are expected to work remotely from within the duty station (The Hague) until the re-opening of the ICC’s premises. They are also expected to work with their own computer and internet connection.
Visiting Professionals are required to work full time for a period between three and six months (to be agreed to prior to commencement).
The Office of the Prosecutor investigates and prosecutes genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed by nationals of a State Party or on the territory of a State Party on or after 1 July 2002, the date of entry into force of the Rome Statute.
The Investigation Division (ID), under the overall management of its Director and management team, provides the investigative component of the integrated team which conducts the Office’s investigations and prosecutions under the responsibility of Prosecution Division’s Senior Trial Lawyer. The Forensic Science Section (FSS), which is part of the Investigation Division provides forensic and scientific support to the entire OTP in all matters relating to forensic science, forensic medicine, cyber forensic investigation, mapping and imagery.
Duties and Responsibilities
The candidate will be assigned to work within the Forensic Science Section, supporting its evidence collection and/or analytical capacity.
Under the general supervision of the Director of the Investigation Division and the direct supervision of the Head, Forensic Science Section, the incumbent can expect to perform one or more of the following duties:

Provide support to the Head, Forensic Science Section, on workflow, processes and efficiency, as well as with the handling and presenting of information and evidence in accordance with standard operating procedures;
Provide advice to the Head, Forensic Science Section on scientific strategies, procedures and techniques;
Provide advice to the Head, Forensic Science Section on linkages, cooperation and scientific partnerships;
Conduct research as required to support investigations;
Any other task required to assist the Forensic Science Section.
All Candidates must have a science degree from a recognised university.
Visiting Professional placements focus on candidates who have extensive experience in their professional careers in relevant fields of work. Applicants for placements in the Forensic Science Section would be required to have extensive professional experience in forensic science, preferably in the context of investigation of serious human rights violations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Able to adapt to multicultural and multilingual working environments;
Possesses strong teamwork skills (listens, consults and communicates proactively);
Has acquired a good standard of computer skills (including Microsoft Office applications).
Knowledge of Languages:
Proficiency in English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable.

Please note that the ICC is not able to provide participants in the Internship and Visiting Professional Programme with remuneration, nor is it possible to provide reimbursement for any expenses incurred during the internship. Accordingly, applicants must have the necessary resources or other financial support for the duration of the internship for which they have been selected.
If a States Party to the Rome Statute decides to provide a donation to the Internship Programmes, it may be possible to offer a limited number of interns a stipend and travel, as applicable. If funding is available and when an intern is selected, the Human Resources Section will conduct an assessment determining eligibility for funding in accordance with the Court’s Policy on Internships and Visiting Professionals and relevant funding conditions.
Interns eligible for funding shall receive detailed information and further instructions after the selection process assuming they meet the conditions of the VA and are considered for the vacancy. Stipends will always be agreed at the time of offering the internship: No funding will be provided at a later stage.
