Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA’s nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the Agency’s activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.

The Division of Nuclear Security (NSNS) is responsible, upon request, for establishing, coordinating and implementing the IAEA’s nuclear security programme to protect against, detect and respond to nuclear security events and threats thereof. NSNS comprises four Sections:

Nuclear Security of Materials Outside of Regulatory Control Section

Nuclear Security of Materials and Facilities Section

Programme Development and International Cooperation Section

Main Purpose

Reporting to the Director of the Division of Nuclear Security, the Outreach Officer develops and implements a multifaceted communication and outreach programme and activities to increase and sustain Member States‘ awareness of the IAEA’s role in ensuring global nuclear security; and to promote the importance of capacity building by Member States in the area of nuclear security. He/she is responsible for the production of and maintenance of a comprehensive suite of outreach material for use by the IAEA staff and dissemination to the general public.


The Outreach Officer is: (1) a technical writer, drafting public information and outreach materials on various nuclear security matters, as well as on various projects and activities; (2) a coordinator of activities related to the communication and outreach within the Division of Nuclear Security; (3) an advisor to Division Director and staff on communication and outreach of the nuclear security matters, as well as production and delivery of public information to target audiences through digital and print channels; and (4) a liaison, collecting and analyzing relevant information from Member States and the Division to develop and implement communication and outreach programme and activities.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Actively support the Division’s efforts to raise the IAEA’s profile in nuclear security through development and implementation of the Division’s communication and outreach programme and activities.

Write and edit, to established deadlines, public information and outreach content for print and digital distribution.

Serve as focal point in the Division for planning and developing public information and outreach materials related to nuclear security.

Advise Division Director and staff on communication and outreach on the nuclear security matters.

Deliver lectures on the IAEA and its role in nuclear security to the relevant audiences.

Support the development of an outreach strategy for major events of the Division.

Develop communication and information materials (e.g. brochures, flyers, web pages) utilizing state-of-the art presentation and visual techniques.

Organize informational events aimed at apprising stakeholders IAEA-wide of the range and nature of the IAEA Nuclear Security Programme.

Maintain the technical content of the Division’s webpages within the IAEA’s website in coordination with relevant staff of the Division and the IAEA.

Liaise with relevant IAEA staff to ensure publishing of high quality communication and outreach information on the nuclear security matters on the IAEA website and social media platforms.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

Bachelor’s Degree

University degree in journalism, public affairs, international relations or a related field.

Minimum of five years of working experience with increasing responsibilities in public affairs, communications and related fields, specifically demonstrating capabilities to effectively write, edit and present public information on complex subjects for print and digital media, preferably at international or intergovernmental level.

Experience in developing content that may utilize social media, multimedia, apps and web publishing tools.

Experience in planning and implementing moderately complex projects.

Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.


The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $62120 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 32924*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks‘ annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
