Organizational Setting

The Director General’s Office (DGO) provides leadership and coordination for all IAEA activities at the executive level for meeting Member States‘ needs, and achieving a one-house approach and a results-based management.

The Office for Public Information and Communication provides objective, accurate and timely information about the IAEA and nuclear developments that fosters public understanding of the IAEA’s global roles. It also provides advice to the Director General on relations with the media and organizes press briefings. The Office coordinates the communication activities for the rest of the house and assists in the media aspects of major IAEA events and conferences.

The Web, Digital Media and Public Information Materials Section has corporate responsibility for the editorial management, creation and development of information products with a particular focus on the web, digital media, internal communications and cross-departmental promotional material.

Main Purpose

The IAEA disseminates information to the media, its partners and the general public on its mission, activities and achievements and builds knowledge and understanding about its support to Member States and the positive impact of nuclear science and technologies for peace and development, using printed and digital content as well as social media campaigns.

The consultants in close collaboration with the team will ensure the information is available in Arabic, Chinese, French and/or Russian via the web site and social media channels and in the form of campaign materials.

In support of the IAEA’s increased outreach activities in languages other than English, the consultant is expected to provide technical expertise to multilingual communications, including (i) identification of relevant content items by target language groups/regions for media, web and social media communications, (ii) research and establishment of relevant platforms and influencers per language groups/regions, with a view to increase the visibility of IAEA activities in all UN languages.

Functions / Key Results Expected

Provide advice on the selection of the most relevant content for audiences in Arabic, Chinese, French and/or Russian, based on regional/language audiences and news trends;
Translate, localize and create web and social media content targeting specific regional/language audiences;
Review the Arabic/Chinese/French/Russian pages of and provide content translation, localization and posting;
Identify web and social media amplifiers and influencers, NGOs and institutions in Arabic/Chinese/French/Russian and coordinate communication with them on the promotion of IAEA content.

Qualifications and Experience

University degree in communication, translation, languages or other related field.

Minimum two years of practical experience in communication, on-line marketing and/or interpretation/translation functions.

Excellent command of English, and mother tongue or translator-level expertise in at least one language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian). Translator-level expertise in more than one of these languages is an advantage.

Good knowledge of news trends in Arabic, Chinese, French and/or Russian, relevant news outlets and online communication platforms in these languages.


The remuneration for this consultancy is a daily fee of up to a maximum of 200, based on qualifications and experience. In case duty travel is required within the assignment, a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) and travel costs are provided. Health coverage and pension fund are the responsibility of the incumbent.
