The Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications implements the IAEA’s Major Programme 2, "Nuclear Techniques for Development and Environmental Protection". This Major Programme comprises individual programmes on food and agriculture, human health, water resources, environment and radiation technologies. These programmes are supported by laboratories in Seibersdorf, Monaco and Vienna. The Major Programme’s objective is to enhance the capacity of Member States to meet basic human needs and to assess and manage the marine and terrestrial environments through the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in sustainable development programmes.
The Project Engineer is responsible for coordinating and facilitating technical consulting, engineering and construction works carried out by project consultants and the selected construction contractor for the ReNuAL 2 ,Multipurpose Building project and any other related projects on the Seibersdorf site. The Engineer is responsible for ensuring the appropriate quality assurance of both refurbished as well as newly built space. The Engineer should also coordinate these activities with any other infrastructure related projects. The Engineer coordinates closely with MT/ SLSS concerning the interface with regular operations of the Seibersdorf site. The Engineer also provides guidance to other technical-related staff that are supporting the projects.
The Project Engineer is: 1) a coordinator for the multiple interfaces between the planning, design and construction activities and the operational requirements of respective IAEA stakeholders, 2) a technical specialist ensuring that at point of receipt of the works from the Main Contractor the works are in accordance with all contracted requirements and that the quality standards have been adhered to and where deviation has occurred that the change has been managed appropriately, 3) a facilitator during the transition period for all works and ensures that the building achieves a soft landing into full operation with minimal impact to the scientific programmes, and 4) a coordinator to ensure that any existing buildings/structures and the related infrastructure agreed to be disposed of are safe for such disposal to be carried out.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Collaborates with the Main Contractor and the Seibersdorf Facility Management functions to ensure unfettered access to the complex.
Collaborates with the Main Contractor and the MTPS Procurement Officer to ensure that works are instructed in a timely manner so as to maintain the planned completion schedule.
Monitors the quality of the works to ensure minimum construction defects.
Monitors and by exception reports on the Main Contractors‘ achievement of scheduled and planned works to the Project Executive.
Liaise with and direct the work of engineers as well as technical staff of the project and develop solutions to overcome unforeseen situations.
Schedule and as needed, adapt each stage of the project according to target time schedules and budget availability; negotiate modifications with contractors and others involved as required.
Ensure that effective quality control measures are in place to ensure that contractors deliver services and buildings according to the agreed and contracted specifications.
Manages the process of change to scope of the works liaising with all appropriate stakeholders.
Communicates clearly all issues associated with the project that will put at risk the successful completion of the project.
In accordance with Prince 2 principles maintains the project management of allocated projects.
Works with the user groups to plan, schedule and implement a successful out turn to the transition period.
Collaborates with the Seibersdorf Facilities Management Section to plan, schedule and implement a defects free transition into a fully operational facility.
Provides input into the general management and operational standards for the Programme Management Group.
Provides input for lessons learned for the review on construction project delivery, to assist future construction delivery.

Management and Programme Analysis
Sound, innovative and effective project planning, coordination, management and leadership skills to ensure timely and cost-effective implementation of capital infrastructure-related projects for large facility and/or building complexes.
Proven ability to draft independently concise and high-quality written documentation, required for establishing new building complexes and associated infrastructure.
Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
Advanced university degree in engineering management, construction management, architecture, facilities management, or another relevant engineering-related discipline. A Bachelor’s degree in a related field with an additional 3 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree.
Minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience and a proven record of planning, coordinating and executing complex capital projects in large office and/or technical complexes, of which at least 2 years in an international environment. Knowledge of German is an advantage given the close collaboration with local contractors.
Excellent oral and written command of English. Fluency in German is an asset. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $74913 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 38580*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks‘ annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
