This position resides within the Digital Strategy Section, as part of the Division of Communications under the guidance of the Head of Social Media Campaigns and Supporter Engagement and the Digital Strategy Lead. The Digital Strategy Section manages all global digital channels and digital communications for UNICEF, including in 5 UN languages, and global social media channels. The Section is also responsible for the build, management and maintenance of global website properties, including country and regional office support for digital transformation, governance and capacity building.

How can you make a difference?

Under the guidance of the Head of Social Media Campaigns and Supporter Engagement and the Digital Strategy Lead, the Digital Communication Officer ( Social Media Editor) is responsible for helping to create compelling social media content. This role will be responsible for supporting the planning, developing and implementing dynamic, interactive and meaningful social media content strategies for daily community engagement as well as campaigns; creating and coordinating key social media campaigns, engagement strategies and tactics; coordinating closely with colleagues on digital marketing, influencer and digital partnership engagement, monitoring and analysis, and moderation of platforms; and serving as one of UNICEF’s key representatives in its global digital outreach.

Key functions, accountabilities and related duties/tasks:

Content creation

Help drive the planning, development and implementation of dynamic, interactive and meaningful social media content strategies for global advocacy priorities, as well as daily community engagement on UNICEF’s global channels (including the official Twitter account of the Executive Director).

Strategize to effectively reach UNICEF’s target audiences through social media channels - as designated by integrated campaign objectives tied to advocacy priorities.

Help lead on the writing of social media packs, crafting engaging content from key messages.

Perform other digital communication and content duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Campaign strategy

Provide support in managing social media engagement initiatives, including user-generated content and other activations.

Liaise with colleagues in the areas of digital marketing and and influencer engagement to guide strategic approaches.

Support digital and social media editorial planning and processes, including strategic guidance to Arabic, Chinese, French and Spanish Digital Producers.

Liaise and work with graphic designers and agencies to produce graphics, animations and other social content for digital campaigns.

Work with the Digital Strategy Section’s M&E consultant to measure and report on social media efforts to help guide social media content and strategy related to the aforementioned campaigns.

Community engagement and moderation

Improve UNICEF’s agility when it comes to reacting to and riding the waves of relevant media or social media moments that relate to UNICEF’s mandate, especially tied to global advocacy priorities.

Monitor and moderate social media channels (including the official Twitter account of the Executive Director), flagging risks and opportunities to deepen engagement, including some out of hours/weekend shifts and during emergencies.

Support other teams in HQ and offices worldwide on their day to day social media efforts.

Identify new opportunities to continually improve our presence across digital platforms to deepen engagement with supporters.

Keep track of activities of other UN agencies and non-profit partners, identifying content to be amplified and shared on UNICEF’s platforms.

Support in providing analytics reports and provide recommendations on tactics to improve UNICEF’s digital presence.

Digital Partnership support

Work in coordination, as relevant, with the Digital Partnerships Officer on projects related to the Facebook Partnership or other.

Help identify opportunities for content amplification on global channels and share insights and learnings from the Insights for Impact project.

Impact of Results:

Global Advocacy Priorities: advocacy campaigns are informed by strategic advice on digital audiences and activations; social media initiatives are fully integrated with processes, plans and deliverables across DOC; Regional and Country Offices are supported to amplify and localize social media content.

Effective content: high quality social content exceeds goals for engagement, video views and traffic with target audiences; content is delivered in a timely manner to allow ample time for translation, distribution and amplification by offices and partners.

Monitoring and evaluation: clear and strategic KPIs are established; analysis is undertaken to continuously improve the effectiveness of social media communication strategy, marketing efforts and activities; results and reports are prepared and shared.

Digital Partnerships: social media initiatives are in line with digital partnership priorities, strengthening efforts in advocacy, C4D and other.

A first level university degree in Communication, Journalism, Public Relations or Marketing is required.


A minimum of 2 years experience working on social media content

Proven ability to write flawless, tight social copy on constant deadlines

Strong social copy editing skills

Demonstrated success in planning and implementing social media campaigns to achieve advocacy goals.

Adept at relationship management

Extensive experience in process and workflows. Project management experience/qualification a major plus

Familiar with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn.

Experience using Hootsuite.

Experience of optimizing YouTube channels and Facebook video content.

Experience in developing and implementing social video and wider digital strategies

Experience in reporting on quantitative and qualitative social analytics.

Proven news sense and and editorial judgement.

Strong ability to manage multiple priorities within specified timeframes.

Awareness of social media communication behaviours in low- and middle-income regions/countries.

Experience of working with agencies highly desirable.

Experience of working on social media communications for high profile individuals desirable.

Understanding of digital marketing and fundraising strategies a plus.

Experience of capacity building and training a plus.

Experience in working for the UN, UNICEF or with International NGOs or global organizations is a plus but not essential

Language Requirements:

Fluency in English required. Knowledge of another UN language an asset.
