Organizational Setting
The Office of Legal Affairs, which reports directly to the Director General, provides legal services of the highest possible standards to the Director General, the Secretariat and to the organs and bodies of the IAEA, as well as to Member States, regarding the implementation of the IAEA’s activities.
The Nuclear and Treaty Law Section provides legal advice and support to the Office of the Director General and the Secretariat in the areas of nuclear safety and security (including civil liability for nuclear damage), nuclear energy, nuclear applications and technical cooperation. It is also responsible for the IAEA’s depositary function as well as the IAEA’s legislative assistance programme, providing advice and training regarding legislative frameworks governing the safe and peaceful uses of nuclear energy to Member States.
Main Purpose
Under the overall guidance of the Director, and reporting to the Section Head, the Legal Officer (Public International/Treaty Law) prepares legal opinions, legal instruments and documents in the area of public international law and treaty law, and provides legal advice on the implementation and interpretation of such instruments and documents.
Role
The Legal Officer (Public International/Treaty Law) is an active member of a team of eight lawyers and three support staff within the Nuclear and Treaty Law Section, while also serving as the reference point on public international law and treaty matters for the Office, supporting the Director and all Sections, providing high quality professional input in developing further and implementing OLA’s activities in this area. The Legal Officer (Public International/Treaty Law) is supported by a Depositary Clerk at the G6 level.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Draft legal advice, studies and recommendations related to the application of international nuclear legal instruments.
Implement OLA’s projects in the area of public international law and treaty law.
Represent OLA and deliver key lectures during IAEA missions and events to promote adherence to and implementation of international legal instruments adopted under IAEA auspices.
Advise on all aspects of treaty law.
Fulfil depositary functions with respect to international agreements to which the Agency is party or for which the Director General is depositary.
Keep abreast of new developments both within and outside the United Nations system in the aforementioned areas of law and recommend changes in corresponding guidelines, tools and systems.
Carry out other legal assignments as determined by the Director or Section Head.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills
An advanced University law degree with good academic record.
A member of a national bar or equivalent.
Minimum of seven years of relevant experience, including at least 5 years at international level, in particular within the UN System.
Excellent command of written and spoken English essential as well as the technique of legal drafting. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
Remuneration
The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at US $77326 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), a variable post adjustment which currently amounts to US $ 36266*, dependency benefits, rental subsidy, education grant, relocation and repatriation expenses; 6 weeks‘ annual vacation, home leave, pension plan and health insurance
