Position type: Temporary Appointment

Location: United States

Division/Equivalent: Programme

School/Unit: Programme Division

Department/Office: Health Section, UNICEF NYHQ

Categories: Health, Alliances and Resource Mobilization, P-3

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

In 1988, UNICEF joined the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to end polio by reaching every child with safe oral polio vaccine. When GPEI was launched, polio was paralyzing 350,000 children every year in 125 countries.

Today, thanks to the global effort for polio eradication, polio is endemic in only three countries (Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria). Unprecedented progress has been made so far with the lowest number of wild poliovirus cases reported in 2017, however we have not been able to stop transmission by the previously set targets.

Within the GPEI, UNICEF is leading in vaccine management and social mobilization, reaching 400 million of children with polio vaccines every year in more than 70 countries. UNICEF plays a critical role due to its global presence, commitment to equity and reaching every child. â‚

The incumbent will work closely with polio finance colleagues, the broader Polio Eradication team (HQ, RO and CO level), health colleagues and other Divisions in UNICEF, in particular the Routine Immunization team and Public Partnership Division and Private Sector Partnership Division. The incumbent will work closely with GPEI core partners, namely the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rotary Foundation, US Center for Disease Control, World Health Organization. The incumbent will also liaise with staff of other UN Agencies, Government officials, international and local media, subject matter experts, multi-lateral and bi-lateral donors to ensure successful resource mobilization and advocacy strategy implementation.

For every child, a polio drop......

The incumbent will be contributing to the implementation and monitoring of the UNICEF polio resource mobilization and advocacy strategy aimed at raising financial resources to meet the funding requirement, whilst maintaining relations with key partners and managing grants with the current polio donors. The incumbent will represent UNICEF in meetings and events with donors and other external stakeholders and partners.
